I always thought clothes are one of the most self-evident things in daily life. Now that I am trying to simulate clothes in a 3D application. I realize how much physics there is in even the most common things. It is simply astonishing how realistic professional 3D applications can simulate clothes, but it takes an awful lot of computing power. Once you hit the “Simulate” button, your computer is pushed to the limit. Slowly, frame by frame, your 3D piece of cloth bends to the laws of physic. Preferences like “Stretch Resistance”, “Dampening”, “Gravity”, “Mass Density” and some other 2 dozen adjustments are necessary to provide the
cloth algorithm with all the information it needs. Working with applications like Maya can make one feel quite small considering the complexity that is behind the well-sorted interface.

You thought Photoshop was huge? Rethink. It’s enourmous how many more features a program can have by adding the third and fourth dimension (time).

However, for the next 6 months Maya will be my program of choice and I’m really excited to discover its features. A real challenge!
