Today the daily morning meeting was the first to be held in English
and Japanese.

For our fellow colleagues it is of course pretty inefficient to do
such a daily routine in two languages, but as we are the company’s
“precious interns” (Mr. Yamadera quoted) every effort is done to
integrate us as well as possible into the company.

From now on we have a better overview about the tasks of our
colleagues. I now realize how important a constant exchange of
information is. The daily meeting is a very nice habit and
particularly necessary for mutual motivation and an efficient
workflow!

The day itself was rather uneventful as I mostly had to learn a lot
about Character Rigging and Skinning in the 3D application Maya.
There is such a wealth of information I have to go through, but at
the end of the day it leaves a satisfying feeling of having achieved
something.

The evening was crowned with an interesting presentation of
Hattori-san, one of the student workers. He researched the topic
Facial Tracking for Graphical User Interfaces. He demonstrated a
facial tracking software which uses an ordinary 640×480 resolution
webcam to track the centre of a human face. This in return is used to
move a mouse pointer over the screen just by moving the face into the
desired direction. The software worked surprisingly well in detecting
the shape of a human face and, but was prone to inaccuracy and
delays. This was where Hattori-san had to develop ideas to compensate
these weaknesses.

The presentation was very enjoyable as everybody had a great time
playing with the tracker to recognize faces from book covers,
puppets, robots etc. 😉 (Btw, it worked in most cases!)

The evening ended with a delicious diner in a restaurant.

I’m having a great time here!

Julian
