Sri Lanka has a long history of Buddhism, which goes beyond 2500 years. 79% of the Sri Lankan population are Buddhists.   Aukana Buddha is the tallest Buddha statue in Sri Lanka.

Aukana statue carved out of the living rock.  This statue’s expression is serene & from his curled hair there sprouts the flame called “siraspata” signifying the power of enlightenment. Though the statue is large & stands straight up with feet firmly planted on the lotus stone pedestal, the body retains a graceful quality enhanced by beautifully flowing drapery clinging to the body.

The magnificent free-standing statue carved out of a single rock is the tallest Buddha statue in existence today. After the destruction of statues at Bamiyan in Afghanistan, the Aukana Buddha has gained even greater significance in the Buddhist World.

  1. Avukana Buddha Statue is one of the ancient Standing Buddha statues that can be found in Sri Lanka. The Avukana Buddha Statue is shown with Asisa Mudra which is said to be the variation of Abhaya Mudra. As you mention, after the destruction of Bamiyan Buddha statues in Afghanistan, there are not many stone Buddha statues in the world. Along with Avukana Buddha statues, Leshan Giant Buddha statue in China are some of the popular stone buddha statues in the world.
