Going Online

As I wrote in my previous post last month, I am going to embrace “the cloud” more and more. In one way or another it is also about “letting go”. It is also about not always wanting to “having” everything.

Let’s talk about movies.

When it comes to movies, I am pretty unemotional (in opposition to music). Usually I am watching a movie once, if it was good maybe I watch it again with good friends. But for most of the times that’s it. I don’t see the point in owning a DVD and storing in physically somewhere in my apartment or buying a digital copy online for a horribly high price, just so it eats away precious space on my harddisk (which is becoming rare again now when the trend is switching to notebooks with SSDs). Watching movies and TV series from steaming services like Hulu has several advantages:

  • Don’t have to go to the shop or wait for the delivery after an online order – just click play and watch.
  • Often much cheaper, even if it is being watch 2 or three times in a row (especially true for subscription based services).
  • Not bound to a specific place like the living room. Even when on a long bus or train ride we can enjoy TV series or movies.
  • Never having to worry about where to store the discs or movie files
  • Much less stuff to carry around when moving to a new apartment 😉
