The special series to put a spotlight on our international staff, “Eyes, JAPAN Employee Interview” is back! Entering the third year of this series, our first interviewee is Tyler Sone from the United States of America.

He has been working in Eyes, JAPAN for around 6 months, and we would like to ask him about his experience in living in Japan and working in Eyes, JAPAN!

Loves Mixed Martial Arts

What is your favorite thing about your home country or home town?

Tyler: My favorite thing about the US is the freedom to explore.

Why did you come to Japan?

Tyler: I came to Japan to study at the University of Aizu.

What do you think about life in Aizu and what is your favorite way of spending the weekend in Aizu?

Tyler: I think life in Aizu is very relaxing and peaceful. In the weekends, I enjoy walking around Aizu while listening to music. And in winter, I like to go snowboarding.

What is your hobby and how do you usually spend your free time?

Tyler: My hobbies are video games, martial arts, and meeting people. In my free times, usually I would go out with friends. If not, I would either be at home playing video games or listening to music.

Do you have any things or skills that you are proud of?

Tyler: I speak fluent Japanese and English, and I can do mixed martial arts.

What is your academic background and what kind of research are you doing?

Tyler: I am currently in a university for a bachelors in IT. I have not started on any research yet.

What do you think is the current most trending topic in the field of technology?

Tyler: I think the current hottest topic is AI and how to make it smarter.

Did you have any job experiences before joining Eyes, JAPAN?

Tyler: Yes. Before Eyes, JAPAN, I worked at a Japanese company as a junior developer.

How did you know about Eyes, JAPAN and why did you decide to join Eyes, JAPAN?

Tyler: I know about Eyes, JAPAN from a friend who works here. I decided to join because of the flexible schedule and available remote work, which worked well with my lifestyle.

What kind of projects have you been working on in Eyes, JAPAN?

Tyler: I am currently working on creating an interactive globe for the new Eyes, JAPAN website.

What do you think about your colleagues in Eyes, JAPAN?

Tyler: I think everybody here is intelligent. Also, their commitment and enjoyment give off a motivating atmosphere to do better.

What do you think about the working environment in Eyes, JAPAN?

Tyler: From the other part-time jobs that I have done, it is one of the best that I have seen. Everyone is focused on their task but it is still relaxed. It is not a stressful environment as I have seen in many other places.

What do you think about working at the company and working at home?

Tyler: I personally prefer to work at home, as it saves traveling expenses and time.

What kind of problems or challenges have you faced while working in Eyes, JAPAN, and how did you solve it?

Tyler: I am currently facing a few problems from a lack of skill and communication. I hope to solve both of these working here by managing my actions better; as I tend to get side-tracked easily.

Dream: To Be The Best Version of Myself

Have you experienced any culture shock while working in Japan?

Tyler: So far, I haven’t experienced any culture shock.

Can you give some pros and/or cons of working at a Japanese company?

Tyler: Some cons that I can think of is work environment tends to be stressful, employees tend to work overtime, and not a lot of creativity are seen as rules are fairly strict. Also, compared to where I’m from, the pay is significantly lower. And the pros is employees do their work properly.

How do you balance your working and private time?

Tyler: Currently, I am having difficulty in doing so. I am attempting to create a routine but unfortunately, I am unable to maintain it.

What kind of project do you want to work on in the future?

Tyler: I would like to work on projects that can show creative outputs, because it is enjoyable.

Any advice for people who wants to work in Japan?

Tyler: If you like consistent, unvarying work, I believe that Japan is the place to do so.

What motivates you to keep working or studying?

Tyler: I believe that knowledge and experience expends my thoughts and creativeness. So far, this is my only motivation to keep working and studying.

Lastly, what is your dream?

Tyler: My dream is to be the best version of myself.
